Take The Plunge

Take The PlungeHave you ever had a problem or situation that has been there for a while, but you can’t drum up the enthusiasm to fix? I know you have, we all have.

Maybe enthusiasm is not the right word, maybe confidence is a better one. Maybe you should have made a phone call or gone to meet someone, but you know they aren’t going to be too pleased to hear from you when you do.

When I say you know, it’s probably more accurate to say you imagine, you suppose, see what I mean? We all build up little scenarios in our heads, and the more often we think about the problem, the more convinced we become, that our imagined outcome is what will actually happen.

This is where we need a bit of Wisdom, Courage and Compassion.

We need the Wisdom to see that what we imagine is the version of events from our point of view, and may be way off. We also need to accept that any problem that is left to fester, will only get worse and never go away by itself.

We need a deal of Courage to put ourselves into a situation that may be awkward, embarrassing or painful (hopefully not physically). Picking up that phone, or ringing that door bell, when we are unsure of the reception, takes guts. But remember that the alternative may be even worse.

Now we need a huge dollop of Compassion. The fact that we have put off doing something about this issue probably means that we feel that we are in the wrong, in some way. So we need to steel ourselves for a potential tirade, whilst remaining calm and sympathetic. We need to understand the problem from the other persons point of view. That will take a dialogue of some nature, and maintaining a compassionate nature may help defuse the situation. We need to bite our tongue when we may feel like giving a little back. I don’t mean a complete capitulation, more a flexible approach to understanding their side of things.

I imagine that each and every person who reads this has an issue, be it large or small, that falls into this category. Only you know what it is, so gird your loins, take a deep breath, and get it sorted today. You’ll feel a lot better when you do, believe me, I know from experience.

Climb Every Mountain

Cool Head - Warm HeartSometimes all it takes to resolve an unexpected and insurmountable issue is a cool head and a warm heart. Oh yes, and a great deal of compassion and understanding from both sides.

Wisdom, Courage and Compassion … isn’t that Buddhahood? Not that I intend to make a habit of it, but a satisfactory result for both parties, I believe.

Happy Days

Young StanleyIsn’t life grand when everyone is happy and getting along just fine. Today has been a day of enlarging family ties, much fun and frivolity, and a great deal of happiness. Introducing Bridget to Hannah and Stanley, as well as meeting Bridget’s children and her granddaughter, made the weekend.

The only fly in the ointment was having to call off meeting Charlotte and Oliver because there was as risk of picking up the tummy bug that Zach and Rob had been suffering with. As Bridget works with some elderly and infirm patients, it would have been rather unwise to expose her to any infection that she might pass on to them. Sad, but sensible.

Next weekend is Oliver’s Christening, so there will be plenty of chance for them to meet up then. I will naturally be performing my joint roles of Granddad Faraway and token Buddhist representative, and promise not to start any interfaith rumpus.

Why Not Syria?

Syria - Homs Under AttackWhat are we waiting for? Assad is busy doing a Gaddafi and killing hundreds of his own people and we are sitting on our backsides and letting it happen.

Why? Are we ‘all warred out’? Are we over budget in the peace keeping department at the United Nations?

Whatever the reasons, it is shameful that the killing of innocent women and children is allowed to continue unopposed. It is shameful that Russia and China are blocking UN plans to intervene. They say they are against an imposed regime change, which might be understandable given their economic ties, but at what cost?

It is way past time, to bring this to a peaceful conclusion. Never mind regime change, what about the normal ‘little’ people of Syria, who is going to stand up and put a stop to this. Or is it yet another example of the common people being expendable when it comes to holding on to money and power?

Another POV

Ask the FamilySometimes it is really easy to get bogged down in our own little world, and find ourselves blinkered by our own thoughts, feelings and opinions, simply because we fail to see things from another person’s point of view.

Years ago, there was a TV quiz show called Ask the Family, hosted by the wonderful Robert Robinson. It was a great series, based on two families, usually Mother, Father and two children, answering general knowledge questions. Good wholesome entertainment and traditional family viewing.

I really liked the round where they would show an image of something really familiar, but from a strange angle. The trick was to identify the object by using your mind’s eye to fill in the missing bits of the image.

Being able to see the world from the others person’s point of view is a bit like that. Using our imagination to put ourselves in their position gives us a better idea of what they are experiencing and hence allows us to make wiser, more compassionate decisions about how we should react to them and their situation.

Next time you find yourself wondering about how to relate to someone’s issues, take a moment to try to see things from their side of the table. It isn’t always easy, but it is always worth that bit of effort, and you will find that you can be of more help, more supportive and more understanding for making the effort. It can be very rewarding for you, and is usually gratefully received.

Another Person’s Shoes

Another Person's ShoesThere is an old saying, that before you criticise someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticise them, you have a pair of their shoes, and you are a mile away 🙂

But seriously, it is easy to see the faults in another when you are only seeing things from your point of view.

Today, I have had the privilege to take over one of my colleague’s roles for the day. I had always considered it to be a fairly simple task, talking to customers, answering their questions, dealing with their complaints, easy peasy … really???

No !!! It is a full on role, extremely varied, and never ending, like swimming against the tide. I made it through the day in one piece. But it has given me a completely different view of the role, and that learning process has been a really good thing for me. I take my hat off to everyone who has to deal with clients, to keep their cool, often whilst being provoked by sarcastic, even rude comments, you are all stars.

Keeping A Level Head

Level HeadedWe had a big, and potentially contentious, meeting at work today. We have spent a great deal of money on the web project, and we are seeing significant results on that investment. But, as with many large projects, there have been omissions and mistakes made on both sides, and we were meeting to discuss the route to resolution.

Now, when there are big bucks at stake, emotions can become inflamed and tempers frayed, but at what cost? Our software partners want to continue doing business with us. We want to resolve the many little issues that have made their way into the live site. So we both have much to gain, and more to lose, if the talking stops and the bun fight begins.

Although my colleagues, and a couple of the partners know about my Buddhist leanings, none of them are active participants. So it was hugely rewarding to find that the meeting was brimming with wisdom, courage and compassion from both sides. We covered most of the points of conflict in a calm and mature manner, and although there is a deal of fine detail to be resolved, the day went better than any of us anticipated.

Problems, Problems

BuddhaA man once came to see the Buddha to get help with his problems. After the man had told the Buddha one of his problems and asked for help, the Buddha replied: “I cannot help you get rid of that problem.”

The man was surprised that the Buddha could not help him in this regard, but he told the Buddha about another problem; he thought to himself that the Buddha should at least be able to help him with that problem. But the Buddha told him “I cannot help you with that problem either.”

The man started to get impatient. He said: “How can it be that you are the perfectly Enlightened Buddha, when you can’t even help people get rid of their problems?” The Buddha answered: “You will always have 83 problems in your life. Sometimes a problem will go, but then another problem will come. I cannot help you with that.”

The baffled man asked the Buddha: “But, what can you help me with, then?” The Buddha replied: “I can help you get rid of your 84th problem.” The man asked: “But what is my 84th problem?” The Buddha replied: “That you want to get rid of your 83 problems.”

We all have problems of one nature or another. Buddhism will not remove those problems, but it will help you come to terms with, and solve them by giving you wisdom and allowing you to see those problems in a different light.

Buddhist Nature

ScorpionOne morning, after he had finished his practice, an old man opened his eyes to see a scorpion floating helplessly in the water. As the scorpion was washed closer to the tree, the old man quickly stretched himself out on one of the long roots that branched out into the river and reached out to rescue the drowning creature.

As soon as he touched it, the scorpion stung him. Instinctively the man withdrew his hand. A minute later, after he had regained his balance, he stretched himself out again on the roots to save the scorpion. This time the scorpion stung him so badly with its poisonous tail that his hand became swollen and bloody and his face contorted with pain.

At that moment, a passer-by saw the old man stretched out on the roots struggling with the scorpion and shouted: “Hey, stupid old man, what’s wrong with you? Only a fool would risk his life for the sake of an ugly, evil creature. Don’t you know you could kill yourself trying to save that ungrateful scorpion?”

The old man turned his head. Looking into the stranger’s eyes he said calmly, “My friend, just because it is the scorpion’s nature to sting, that does not change my nature to save.”

Spider Goats

Synthetic Biology - Pick 'n MixGenetic engineering has been around for some time, but Horizon tonight showed that our abilities in synthetic biology have gone much further and we are even entering the realms of the amateur geneticist. From goats, genetically engineered to produce spider silk in their milk, to the ‘glow in the dark’ bacteria manufactured in a local US community centre, and even the first computer generated life-form, the potential for man to ‘play god’ has never been more real.

It is now possible to build ‘intelligent’ molecules via computer software. Molecules that are programmed to carry out specific tasks, opening up the possibility to introduce ‘magic bullets’ that will only target specific cells, such as cancers, from within our own bodies.

The science is amazing, both simple and complex at the same time, treating the building blocks of life, our very own DNA, a bit like a box of Lego. The applications are limitless, as broad and varied our imaginations can stretch, but with this power comes a huge responsibility. The whole science is being run in a similar manner to Open Source software, subject to peer review and overseen by organisations such as BioBricks.org.

It is both fascinating and a little scary. I intend to find out more about it, and maybe even create my own luminescent bacteria in my kitchen. As with all scientific advances, they can be used for good, or bad, but what is always needed is more than a little WCC.
