Climate Change Protest

Bournemouth Climate Change March - Click to view the Bournemouth Echo articleThe sun shone and the weather was lovely and warm in Bournemouth today.

All good news for those folks who joined the Climate Change March, part of a worldwide protest against the continued lack of meaningful action by governments to slow or reverse the disastrous effects of global warming.

I get all my gas and electricity from Ecotricity, who produce and sell 100% green energy, and I try to do as much as possible to reduce my carbon footprint, but it all got me thinking about my Buddhism and the topic of Life-Energy.

When we practice gongyo and chant daimoku before the Gohonzon, the good and evil capacities of our lives begin to function as the exalted form of fundamental existence.

Lives that are full of the pain of Hell, lives that are in the world of Hunger, lives warped by the world of Anger – such lives too begin to move in the direction of creating their own personal happiness and value.

Lives being pulled toward misfortune and unhappiness are redirected and pulled in the opposite direction, toward fortune and happiness, when we make the Mystic Law our base.

Chant daimoku with all your heart, chant whenever you feel downcast, whenever you feel listless or lacking in focus.

Chanting daimoku connects us directly to chi, the Universal energy, the ultimate renewable energy, so chant and raise your life-state, your life-energy and put your life back on track.

Green Energy

Chanting - The Ultimate Renewable EnergySwitching energy providers from British Gas to Ecotricity will do much more than simply save me money each month. They produce and sell 100% green energy, that got me thinking about Buddhism and Life-Energy.

Desire Or Disaster?

Global IssuesOn the recommendation of my mother, I watched a program about modern engineering solutions, Supersized Earth – The Way We Move, which took us through a number of amazing engineering solutions. The world’s highest bridge, a ship that can carry oil rigs, they are projects that defy description.

As I watched, I was torn between amazement at the audacity at the engineering and a feeling that this was slowly turning into a list of everything that is wrong with the modern world. When we can boast that the world now has enough cars to fill the Grand Canyon, I wonder where it will all end.

We now appear to have the knowledge and ability to overcome almost any obstacle that nature may present, which on face value may be desirable. But being able to shape our world, to extract fuels and minerals from ever more difficult deposits just means that we will use those resources all the sooner.

My only wish, is that our common sense in employing this knowledge increases at least as fast as our ability to use the knowledge. My fear is, that as with most things in the modern world, the lure of the commercial opportunities will outweigh the focus on environmental issues.

Global Family Values

The Amazing BEDZED Wind VanesBy Saturday lunchtime we had made our way over to Sue and Steve’s in Hackbridge Surrey (or is it Greater London?). They live in the award winning BEDZED development, which is designed to be as eco-friendly as possible, and is actually a truly amazing place. Their roof garden is on the roof of the apartment opposite, very novel indeed.

The apartments are all insulated to the highest standards and have no internal heating, save for the heat generated by the communal hot water system, cooking and the sun. The multi-coloured vanes on the roofs help to keep the air circulating, but have heat exchangers built in, so the air going into the properties is warmed to the temperature of that being drawn out.

It’s a great idea. Designed to be as economical to run as possible, the idea is to leave as small a carbon footprint as is economically viable. The south side of the apartments are predominantly glass, to allow the heat of the sun to gain access during the day. But they are all double (or triple) glazed so that heat is then retained. They also sport arrays of solar cells, which generate electricity to power the free-to-use electric vehicle charging points dotted round the parking areas.

For those of us who try to be as green as possible, it really is an amazing example of what can be achieved when a little extra thought goes into the planning. Thanks for putting us up S & S, it was a real eye-opener to see just how much of an eco-warrior you guys really are.
