Super Saturday

Spring SunshineThe plan for today had been to get up, chant and then get some DIY done so that we could spend time down by the river Frome tomorrow. But as with all plans, a degree of flexibility never goes amiss. The weather forecast says it’s going to rain on Sunday, so it made far better sense to chant and then enjoy today’s sunshine leaving the DIY for tomorrow.

Following an exploratory expedition into Plastic Wax records to see the one and only Mr Dave Kellard, we headed off up Gloucester Road to see what ethnic delights awaited us. For those who don’t know the area, it is an eclectic mix of small privately own emporiums with the odd corporate coffee shop thrown in for bad measure.

It was interesting to see that a chap had set up a one-man demonstration outside Costa, to express his feelings about the apparently unstoppable encroachment of coffee shops,  fast food and mini supermarkets. He has a point, without the little private shops, the whole character of the place would change forever.

Having bought a nice freshly baked loaf from The Bread Shop (imaginatively named) and taken it home for lunch with a selection of yummy cheeses, we took a not-so-leisurely walk along the river. B’s daughter Josie, is a very free spirit and took us off the path most travelled over fallen trees, through piles of leaf litter and up onto a rock escapement.

From there we could get a totally different view of the river, as well as the people and their dogs who were enjoying the warm spring sunshine. It was great to get out in the fresh air, to have the sunshine on our faces and to be able to make the most of such a beautiful natural amenity. No doubt the DIY will rear it’s ugly head tomorrow, but at least we have the memories of today.

Another Sunset Anyone?

What is it with me and sunsets?

I just can’t get enough of them, I’d have one every day if I had my way.

Anyway, this time lapse sequence was taken from the office window this afternoon … click on the image to play the video …

I can hear MidniteRainbow’s squeals of delight from here.

Just Stunning

Nothing to say tonight, other than there was the most beautiful sunset, which I have tried to capture, hand held on my smartphone.

This is specially for my blogging buddy MidniteRainbow and all those who are equally entranced by sunrise and sunset …

January Sunset

The bright dot in the photo is not lens flare or dust, it is the Evening Star, Venus. When nature is this beautiful, life cannot be all bad, can it?

What A Day !!!

Global WarmingWeather of biblical proportions has struck most of the UK today, uprooting trees, creating havoc on the roads, cutting power to thousands of homes and causing two fatal accidents. In the office, it sounded like the roof was about to lift off and the windows were flexing with each gust of wind.

Whilst it pales into insignificance when compared to the hurricanes and tornados we see around the world, it still serves to remind us that although we feel we have control of our environment most of the time, nature has virtually unlimited power at its disposal.

Tonight, the weather has calmed, the wind has dropped and the rain abated. I hope none of you have suffered as a result of todays storms. The weathermen are promising worse for tomorrow, so let us not forget that we are at the mercy of the elements, and that these record breaking events are almost certainly connected to global warming, something we can, indeed must, control.

Thunderbolt And Lightening …

Dorset FloodsVery, very frightening … well not really, but the weather today was truly awesome. I’m not quite sure how much rain fell on Ringwood today, but it sounded like most of it fell on our office roof. Our quiet little stream, so calm and idyllic, turned into a raging torrent of chocolate coloured power.

Dorset Floods… Earlier this year

So much for the British summer. Mid August and all day today it looked and felt like November. Dark, cold and threatening, raindrops crashing into the swimming pool we call the office car park. Thunder and lightening crashed all around and meanwhile, just down the road in Bournemouth, people were being rescued from their cars that had become trapped in flash floods.

Earlier today … Dorset Floods

Being part of the Universe, these events should never surprise us. Nature has it’s own way of sending us messages, and today’s was delivered by loud hailer.

A Beautiful Day

The morning started very quietly, too quietly in fact.

That magical hush, where there are no sounds,  that accompanies falling snow.

Being in the luxurious position of not having to go out, we cleared the snow from the car and took the short trip up to Hamworthy Park. Partly to take in the beautiful sights of snow on the beach and partly for someone to get some practice driving in the snow, something in short supply in South Africa.

Here are a few photos of the conditions and the season …
