You Are A Winner

Intrinsic ValueThey are estimating the Friday Euro Lottery draw will have a jackpot of €100,000,000. What would you do with that kind of money? Buy a fancy car, a posh house, even buy Greece? It’s a pipedream for so many people, which is where all the money comes from, from the tickets that people buy. For many, it is, in effect, their only realistic route to such riches. Or is it?

Buying their lottery ticket once, or twice, even thrice a week, is their little bit of fantasy, their change to make it big. There is nothing wrong with such dreams, somebody has to win, sometime. But does it mask their responsibility for their own lives, futures, fortunes?

Of course, the idea behind the lotteries, scratch cards and the rest of the paraphernalia is to raise money for projects, causes and charity work that is so needed in these austere times. All well and good, it’s a bit of harmless fun, a couple of quid a week to buy the chance to live the high life.

I’ll never win it, I know that for a fact. The very first UK National Lottery was drawn on my 40th birthday, not as a celebration of that auspicious event, it just happened that way. For the first few weeks I went along with the wave of enthusiasm, the same as everyone else. When it became clear that there was more chance of being struck by lightning than picking six correct numbers, and I stopped.

Now I’m not preaching against the evils of gambling, for that is what it is. I don’t want to stop people having a little slice of fun, if that is how they want to achieve that. But we are all responsible, all in charge and in control of our own fortunes, not those fat cats at Lottery HQ. So have your fun, get excited as the balls rattle around inside Arthur or Lancelot, but never forget, your life is your responsibility, take charge with both hands, summon up boundless determination and make it happen.

Back In The Groove

Batteries Fully ChargedHaving had a nice long weekend, with beautiful weather and plenty of time for chanting, had left me well rested and ready for the start of a new week. It’s well documented that I’m allergic to Mondays, they are always busy with the build up of orders, questions and issues from the weekend. But with my batteries fully charged I was ready to meet the challenge head on.

With all the changes to the website, the business systems and the company, it’s a pretty rare occurrence to have the whole team in the office at one time, but today was one of those times. We have a great team, we all get on and we work well together, and as they say, a problem shared is a problem halved, so the day went rather well.

I find that taking to our customers, in order to resolve their queries and issues, much easier and pleasant than trying to do it via email. So today I got to speak to some very nice people, all of whom seemed to appreciate the personal touch of a phone call. We can never please everybody all the time, but leaving them feeling that we really care at least makes things a little better.

So a good day, some nice comments about yesterday’s post and photo and I’m feeling good about taking on the world.

Happiness Is A Choice

Happiness Is A ChoiceIt may seem to be a strange thing to say, but our happiness, or otherwise, is actually a choice we make for ourselves. It’s basically tied to the way we view the challenges that life throws at us.

When something happens, something we would rather hadn’t happened, we have a choice to make. Do we throw our hands in the air and go into a mood of depression, or do we face the issue head on?

If we take the former route, only seeing the bad side of things, the issue will seem to get bigger and worse than it actually is. Our depression will make things even worse, and a negative spiral ensues. This is not a good route to a positive outcome, and even if we were to conquer the problem, it would take us longer and require more effort in the long run. How often have you got into a state over something, only to realise, in the fullness of time, that it really wasn’t as bad as you thought?

The other way to approach things, is to remain calm, look for the positives, and there will be some, rather than focussing on the negatives. A calm mind works better than a frantic mind. Focussing on the positives actually raises our life-state, which makes us feel more energetic and more able to do what needs to be done and meet the challenges head on.

Enlightenment has been described as a state in which we are continuously happy. Now that might sound a bit far fetched, but if we make the right choices, consciously and subconsciously, we can maintain a state of happiness. To attain the ability to control our minds to such a degree that we make the right choices every time is no small matter, which is why the path to enlightenment is long and winding. But I know that I am further down the path each day, and the goal is worth every ounce of effort.

Back On Track

SmileAfter a few pills from the Doc, I’m feeling a whole lot better this evening. I’m in a higher life-state and able to give Gongyo one hundred percent.

I have to admit that I was going to work from home today, you know how your inbox fills up when you have some time away from the coal face. But the boss told me to have a rest and come back restored tomorrow, so thanks to him for that.

Having time to just sit and think can be very productive, and I’ve been able to put a few things straight in my own mind. Not that I was way off track, but the odd tweak now and then always helps.

So thanks to all those who rang or send texts wishing me well. In the same way as sending Daimoku can help others, knowing that your loved ones are thinking of you helps too.

Why Buddhahood?

BuddhahoodEven if you are born into the most affluent circumstances, or enjoy a spectacular marriage, that is the envy of others, there is no guarantee that you will be happy.

Happiness does not depend on wealth or personal appearance, nor does it hinge on fame or recognition. If your heart is empty, you cannot build genuine happiness.

There is an expansive life-state of profound, secure happiness that transcends any material or social advantage, it is called the life state of Buddhahood.

This is why we chant, it is why we strive daily to grow ever nearer to that life-state. This is not a selfish or exclusive goal, as we learn the Wisdom, Courage and Compassion needed to achieve our aim, we willingly take our family, friends and colleagues along with us.
