Cowards Cannot Become Buddhas

BuddhaThis challenging and inspiring piece came from last night’s Gosho Study.

The direct route to uncovering your enlightenment is by challenging negativity. You don’t call out your Buddhahood by running away from your problems. Change your way of thinking. Obstacles, negativity, adversity, whatever words you want to attach to it – think instead – opportunity, opportunity, opportunity! This is the means by which you can call out your Buddhahood and become in charge of your life.

Every time that you think that you are powerless to change a problem in your life; you have reverted to being non Buddhist. You must chant out of the conviction that you will win. It is not mindless Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, it is not half hearted. It is a deep conviction that Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is more powerful than anything else and you must attack your negativity with this conviction. You can’t do it if you won’t become a fighter. Buddhism is win or lose. And, for those of us practising Buddhism, victory is the only option. We must become masters at life by mastering negativity.

You learn that after challenging negativity, negativity, negativity, day after day, over many years, that what you were always looking for all of your life you always had; it’s always been there within you. What you learn is that your life is the greatest dream that you could ever dream. It is within your grasp and control at this moment and every moment.

So create a life for yourself that is beyond your wildest dreams. Buddhism is about winning. Buddhism is about not stopping until all people become happy. It’s about becoming mad at fundamental darkness that takes away peoples’ souls so that they become hopeless, when in fact; inside them they have the greatest seed to change anything.

The reason we have faith is to do what you cannot do already with your own human effort. You don’t need faith to do what you can already do. But how can you ever know your limitless potential of the power of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo unless you have the courage to fight for that which is illogical in your mind. Challenge the impossible. The more you have the courage to challenge the impossible, the more you will come to understand YOU ARE MAGNIFICENT!

Goal Setting

Goal SettingMake goals. Whether big or small, work towards realising them. You must be serious and dedicated to your goals – you will never get anywhere if you just treat them like a joke. An earnest, dedicated spirit shines like a diamond and moves the hearts of people. That is because a brilliant flame burns within.

If we are sincere, people will understand our intentions, and our positive qualities will shine forth. It is pointless and destructive to be overly conscious about outward appearances.

As the German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote,

“How may one get to know oneself?

Never by contemplation, only indeed by action

Seek to do your duty, and you will know at once how it is with you”

Goals are at the heart of our success, in fact they are the Kyo, and indeed the very basis of Kyo Chi Gyo I. Set your goals with care, and once they are set, aim for them with vigour passion and determination in equal measure.

A Sad Exit

Bradley WigginsToday’s stage of the Tour de France ended with a rather sweet and sour outcome. Mark Cavendish of HTC won the stage with a trademark storming finish, but British champion Bradley Wiggins sadly crashed out with a broken collar bone.

As a fanatical armchair pro-cycling fan, I feel very sorry for Wiggins, knowing that he has put in a huge amount training in preparation for this years Tour. Professional cyclists are a breed apart when it comes to sportsmen. The dedication needed to compete, day after day, at the highest level is unstinting and for such effort to come to an end in such a manner is a tragedy.

Wiggins was looking calm, collected and at his very best for the start of this years Tour. Having had a very public dressing down last year, he had pulled out all the stops to get himself in peak condition, and the determination was showing, with him well placed after the first few days.

Not only is it a painful way to leave the race, it also leaves his Sky teammates looking for a natural successor to lead the team.

We all know the feeling of disappointment of striving with all our heart to attain our goals, only to fall (in Bradley’s case, quite literally) short of the desired outcome.

Very sorry to see you go Wiggo, stay positive and make a full and speedy recovery. You have known the Heaven of winning, now you must deal with the Hell of dropping out. Treat those two imposters just the same, as Kipling wrote, and come back even stronger.

Keep On Keeping On

Determination and FaithLife has it’s ups and downs, the ups are easy, the downs are not, and that’s where we need to be strong and persevere in our quest for happiness.

What was the secret of Thomas Edison’s success? He explained that it was to never give up before he succeeded in what he was trying to do.

Not giving up, that’s the only way. Once we give up we are defeated.

This is equally true in respect of faith. Quitting is not faith.

We must keep chanting until our prayers are answered and our goals are achieved.

This is the correct way of practice.

Deeper Insight

OogwayWatching DreamWork’s Kung Fu Panda on TV tonight, not for the first time I have to admit, was another good lesson in humility, wisdom, trust and self confidence.

If you haven’t seen the film it is, on the face of it, a kids cartoon, lots of action, lots of fun.

At a deeper level, it tells the story of the underdog, Po the Panda, who is chosen as the Dragon Warrior against the odds. Nobody believes that Oogway the Turtle has made the right decision, that he was chosen  by chance, even though Oogway explains that there is no such thing as chance.

Even Po is convinced that he has been chosen by mistake, and cannot believe that he is the Dragon Warrior. He is slandered by everyone, even Shifu, who is charged with training Po in the ways of Kung Fu. The other pupils of Shifu, Tigress, Monkey, Crane, Viper and Mantis also look down on Po, though they slowly come to see that his determination is to be admired.

After Oogway passes on, having asked Shifu to believe in Po and following a lot of learning, Po has to meet his nemesis Tai Lung to save the valley.

Lots of Buddhist principles are woven through the film, a good watch and a fun way to learn.

The Results Of Determination

Tranquillity - The Calm After The StormWoo Hoo !!! The new website went live today. After months of effort from everyone, we launched this morning, and apart from a few little issues, it’s been rather well received.

It’s silly o’clock and I’m still polishing the pages, so this is a really short post. But seeing the results of all our determination has been fantastic today. Another good example of Kyo Chi Gyo I.

I did allow myself five minutes to go and stand by the stream on my way out of the office tonight, to let my brain cool down a little, so that’s where today’s image came from.

Onwards and upwards !!!

Determination

DeterminationDetermination grows out of adversity. To accomplish an easy or pleasant task does not require determination, it is the difficult or unpleasant task that most definitely does.

Dreams don’t come true on their own. Determination is required to achieve the things we set out to accomplish and to keep things going in the face of discouragement.

The essential purpose of Buddhism is to make people happy. True happiness is the result of consistent effort and constant growth as a human being.

Remind yourself every day, why you are pursuing your goal. Self doubt and negative thoughts are the making of your fundamental darkness. Confront your inner demons and tell them that you are going to overcome them. Take heart and strength from your Practice, chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo will raise your life-energy and help you focus on the task in hand. Remember, nobody ever felt satisfaction from giving up on their dreams.

And keep this in mind when times get tough …

When your determination changes, everything else begins to move in the direction you desire. The moment you resolve to be victorious, every nerve and fibre in your being immediately orient themselves toward your success.

Nam Myoho Renge Kyo.
